4/24/08- - - -Well, alot's happened since last update. Sorry it's been a while. EOP has created tools that enable us to extract/re-import the game model meshes, and we have done some testing and found some things out. For one, it's impossible at this time to add new mechs, worlds, weapons, skins, etc.....without the source code, but many suspected that anyway. We had some ideas that we threw around that gave us hope, but it turns out they didn't work. So, now we know what's possible, and our focus can now become steady. Replacement mods! And so the work begins anew...
An HD patch is planned which will install high-poly meshes for the mechs, and, combined with a few other fixes, this patch will hopefully help mw3 run better on xp machines. We might even throw in higher pixel counts on the textures. These two things will help slow down modern PC setups and the hope is that xp will run the game better. Additionally, EOP's triangle fix will be included, and a no-cd adjustment that works with xp, allowing the player to skip the videos on the cd which have been a source of some xp problems as well.
Mech replacement mods are also being planned. These will be completely new mech meshes that will take the place of the old mechs. You won't be able to play with combinations of the original lineup and the new mechs, so it'll be like playing a new and different version of mw3 each time we do a "replacement" mod. If we're lucky, by the time the first set comes out maybe enough work will have been done to re-create the worlds as well, and include "world substitutions" along with the mechs. Don't get your hopes worked up too high though because not much testing of this concept has been done, and who knows, there may end up being un-fixable bugs in the system.
1/04/08- - - Happy New Year to All and Hails Mechwarriors! Well alot's happened since last news item. The first installment of the Mod is up and available, and EaterofPies has done some amazing things. He's made a patch that fixes the upper torso firepoints for the Daishi and the Cauldron Borne and this is a huge leap for knowledge into the files related to editing the mechs themselves. (I helped of course!) This will ultimately lead to a HD patch for the game which will have more detailed models and graphics for the mechs which will in turn hopefully make modern PC's and OS's and Graphics engines work harder which should help modern PC's run mw3 with more success than before. Not only that, but the mechs will look alot cooler!
If anyone's interested in modelling NEW mechs for mw3 give me a shout at mw3.org. The HD patch is a stepping stone to becoming able to ADD NEW MECHS to the game, and this possibility becomes more hopeful everyday for us. So if you're a modeller NOW's the time to start working on mechs for mech3! Just remember a few guidlines- - -
They've got to LOOK like they belong in mw3, SO NO WATER-COLORED CARTOONY ANIMAL MECHS! :) If that's the kind of thing you're into just keep on playing mercs!
As long as they maintain the spirit of how the mechs look and feel in mw3 then we want 'em.
Coming soon: Patch 1.1 for the Basic Mod, with several improvements added.
Stay tuned.
